Glory Boardwalk

Glory Boardwalk

Kids running on Boardwalk

By Tony Rehagen

Follow the tracks, imprints of sneaker soles and bike tires in the sand drifts strewn across the boardwalk. Follow them into the woods, the shadowy tunnel of moss-draped oak, sand-cedar, and slash pine. Listen closely: Beyond the cicadas’ rattle, the gulls beckon. Follow them through the thicket into open ocean air. In 1989, prop boots of famous men and extras punched holes in this wide, flat beach in scenes for the movie Glory. But this plank, this view off the edge of the Earth is worthy of the name on its own. Smell the salt. Follow the footprints, big feet beside little feet, as the boardwalk crosses the dunes onto the smooth sand, where the little prints break off into a run and are erased by the waves.
