Diamondback terrapin nesting season is in full swing on Jekyll Island’s causeway! During the summer these turtles leave the marsh in search of high, dry ground to lay their eggs. Often, this can lead to them crossing the road in search of what they perceive to be better nesting sites.
Between April and July, be alert for diamondback terrapins as they leave the marsh to nest. Terrapins are more often seen in the two hours on either side of high tide, but they may be seen at any time. Please use caution and follow speed limit signage. Remember that swerving to miss terrapins and/or exiting a vehicle to assist a terrapin are both significant hazards and you should prioritize your own safety on the road.
The Jekyll Island Authority Conservation Department will be monitoring the causeway daily during nesting season. New this year is a live interface that can be viewed below and will allow you to follow along with the season.
Should you see a terrapin, or have a concern, we encourage you to alert our staff directly using the Terrapin Hotline at 912-270-8865.
