Supermoon Occurs This Weekend

On Saturday June 22 and Sunday June 23, the largest “supermoons” of the year will be in our nighttime skies. What exactly is a imagessupermoon? The term, coined by astrologer Richard Nolle more than 30 years ago, is defined a supermoon as “a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90 percent of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.” Sunday night is when the more super of the supermoons will be the largest, but on both nights, the moon will be noticeably bigger.

To catch a great view of these astronomical wonders, head over to Jekyll Island for a peaceful nighttime stroll on the beach, or a calming session set to the sound of waves on one of our piers.

Here’s a guide to both:

Great Dunes Park Beach

Great Dunes Park is home to a host of island activities, including our annual Beach Music Festival and UGA Alumni Oyster Roast. This 20-acre portion of beachfront park features several picnic pavilions, a deck for beach events, play areas, and public beach access, as well as biking paths, bocce ball and volleyball courts. Public restrooms and showers are located at the park, with ample parking in the lots adjacent to the Jekyll Island Convention Center.

Driftwood Beach

Located on the north end of Jekyll Island, Driftwood Beach continually amazes guests with its beautiful driftwood and ocean views. Often cited as a Gothic tree graveyard, this stretch of beach is, at once, haunting and mesmerizing.  Throughout the year, Driftwood Beach an ideal location for photography, as well as a popular site for gorgeous island weddings.

Glory Beach

Famed as a location for the popular Civil War film “Glory,” this portion of Jekyll beach is located next to our Jekyll Island Soccer Complex. Along the Glory Boardwalk once walked some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities, including Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, who all starred in the classic 1989 movie.

Jekyll Island Wharf

Located in the Historic District along the Intracoastal Waterway, the wharf is home to Latitude 31 and Rah Bar, as well as coastal fishing tours.

Jekyll Harbor Marina

A full service marina, Jekyll Harbor offers a wide variety of services, including boat slips, floating decks, dry storage, laundry services, picnic areas and houses SeaJay’s restaurant.

Clam Creek Pier

Located near Driftwood Beach with an access road across from the Jekyll Island Campground, the Clam Creek provides wide views of the ocean, perfect for a night of star gazing and fishing.
