On Saturday June 22 and Sunday June 23, the largest “supermoons” of the year will be in our nighttime skies. What exactly is a supermoon? The term, coined by astrologer Richard Nolle more than 30 years ago, is defined a supermoon as “a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90 percent of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.” Sunday night is when the more super of the supermoons will be the largest, but on both nights, the moon will be noticeably bigger.
To catch a great view of these astronomical wonders, head over to Jekyll Island for a peaceful nighttime stroll on the beach, or a calming session set to the sound of waves on one of our piers.
