Celebrating 10 Years

Happy 10th Birthday, Georgia Sea Turtle Center!

June 2017 commemorates the Georgia Sea Turtle Center’s 10th year in operation. To mark this momentous occasion, we’re celebrating all month long and you’re invited! Plan your visit in June now.

10th Birthday Celebration

Saturday, June 10: 2-5 p.m. | Georgia Sea Turtle Center

This event is free & open to the public. Center admission will be waived from 2-5 p.m.

We’re hosting a birthday party, and you’re invited! The Center will be “decorated,” showcasing ways you can reduce plastics, we’ll have a birthday card for you to sign, and there will even be cupcakes! The afternoon will include creature features, live music, and a special “Dunk the Doc” fundraiser.

Please join us for the celebrations!

Beach Clean Up

Saturday, June 17: 9-11 a.m. | Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Become a Marine Debris Citizen Scientist by collecting and bagging debris along Great Dunes Beach. Volunteers will record where, when, what, and how much debris is picked up.

Where: Meet at Georgia Sea Turtle Center, 214 Stable Rd.
What to Bring: Water, sunscreen, and bug spray
Materials Provided: Gloves, bags, and data sheets
Clean-Up: Targeted for two hours, but guests can depart as needed
Questions: Holly Buresh, Marine Debris Member, gstcvolunteer@jekyllisland.com

Book Signing Saturday

Saturday, June 24: 12-3 p.m.

Meet some of Jekyll Island’s very own published authors.

Scute’s Ocean Adventure
Lori Hunt, GSTC Administrative Coordinator

Based on the puppet show of the same name, Scute’s Ocean Adventure tells the tale of a loggerhead sea turtle’s journey from the nest out to the open ocean. Lori Hunt’s fun, lively illustrations bring this story to life in this colorful children’s book.

Thallasia’s Story
Lynne Wilcox, long-time GSTC volunteer

A true story about Thalassia, a juvenile green sea turtle rehabilitated at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Lynne Wilcox wrote and self-published this book as a labor of love for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. All proceeds from its sale are donated to the GSTC or Oklahoma Aquarium, Thalassia’s permanent home.

Jekyll Island’s Treasured Recipes
Dorothy Carswell, Jekyll Island resident

Quite possibly the longest Jekyll Island resident, Dorothy Carswell has collected recipes from other island residents and highly prized dishes sought after by cooking enthusiasts. Curated with the intent of supporting recovery efforts for the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), all proceeds from the sale of this book benefit the GSTC.

Birthday Donation Drive

June 1-30 | Georgia Sea Turtle Center & Online

From nutrient-rich seafood to making our own “oceans,” it takes tremendous resources to care for our patients at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. A portion of all admission tickets to the Center goes into educational programming, medical procedures and general needs. However, if you’d like to contribute more on your visit, we’ll be collecting physical donations from our wish list throughout the month of June. To donate an item, please bring it to the Center, and drop it in the big birthday gift box.

Can’t make it to Center, but still want to help? Purchase items through Amazon.com from our wish list, and you can have items shipped directly to us.
