Celebrate the 4th of July on Jekyll Island

Celebrate freedom. Celebrate family. Celebrate on Jekyll Island! This year, Jekyll Island will imgreshost a tremendous day for beachside fun to mark the 4th of July Holiday. Families and friends are invited to pack a picnic and play in the sands at Great Dunes Park, attend a turtle release, then stick around for an evening fireworks display.

Prior to the fireworks display, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center will release one of its most popular patients. Hugue, a sub-adult loggerhead with more than 250 adoptive parents, was found stranded in December 2011, at Huguenot Park in Jacksonville. Staff at the center worked for months to regulate Hugue’s blood levels, heal his wounds and bring him back to health.  Now, he has been declared healthy enough to be released back to the wild.

Join Hugue and sea turtle staff at 6 p.m. July 4, at Great Dunes Park, to watch the release. Prior to the release, conservation and eco-educational programs and activities will be set up for attendees. Admission to the release and educational activities is free.

For the busy day, the Georgia State Patrol will increase its presence on Jekyll Island that Thursday, and likewise will be assisted on Highway 17 by Glynn County Police as guests are exiting the island after the fireworks show. Jekyll Island Authority staff will also be stationed at Great Dunes Park to ensure that the public restrooms and gathering spaces are kept clean and well-stocked.

Island guests and residents attending the annual fireworks display will be able to park in the Great Dunes parking lot. The Jekyll Island Authority encourages guests to come to the Island for the 4th of July celebration, but be aware that traffic may be heavier than normal to due to the holiday.

The July 4th fireworks display will begin after sundown, about 9 p.m., and can be seen from anywhere around Great Dunes Park and the Jekyll Island Convention Center campus. Admission to the Jekyll Island celebration is free. Please note the $6 daily parking fee does apply. For more information about the fireworks show, please call our Guest Information Center at 912.635.3636 or visit jekyllisland.com.

Additionally, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel will host a separate Independence Day celebration at the Club Hotel Beach Pavilion. Guests are invited to the Club Hotel’s Beach Party, which will feature a classic summer buffet, including burgers, low country boil, grilled pineapple chicken and more. Admission to the Beach Party and buffet is $25 for adults and $12.50 for children ages 3 to 12. For more information, visit jekyllclub.com.
