Annual Parking Pass Adds AVI Tag Technology

Been hearing about an AVI Tag to go along with your annual Jekyll Island decal? Have some questions about what exactly that means? Below, Guest Information Center Manager Jerod Myers explains the new technology:

In September 2012, Jekyll Island opened the new Guest Information Plaza located outside our beautiful, remodeled Guest Information Center.  The new Plaza allows guests, residents and employees access to the island by using an automated pay-in-the-lane system.  Daily, weekly and annual renewal passes can be purchased at the machines, which accept cash, credit cards and debit cards; coins are not accepted.

With the new Plaza comes new technology.  Annual passes have been modified from the original barcode decal to a high-tech decal, called an AVI Tag. The new AVI Tag is placed on the inside of your vehicle’s windshield, and allows you to use any of the three Plaza lanes.

Starting October 4, 2013, the old decal scanner will be removed and become obsolete. All annual passholders MUST have the new AVI tag by this time. For the next several months, instead of renewing annual passes through the mail, we ask each annual passholder to stop by the Guest Information Center to renew their annual pass. You do not need to wait until the pass expiration date to do this; we will simply extend the current expiration date by adding an additional 12 months. For example, if you purchased or renewed your pass on August 1, 2012, you can come in and renew it anytime, then receive the new AVI tag, making your expiration date change from August 1, 2013 to August 1, 2014.

The Guest Information Center is conveniently open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 5.m. Sunday. From June to the end of August, the Center will have expanded summer hours, open form 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Stop by and one of our team members will help ensure your new AVI Tag is installed and working properly.

The annual renewal will remain $45 for 12 months, and $90 for oversized vehicles.  Please keep in mind oversized vehicles are classified as 8 feet or taller.  At the time of your renewal, there will be a one-time charge of $13 for the new AVI Tag.  Upon purchase of your new AVI Tag, a member of our team will carefully remove your old decal and properly install the AVI Tag.  If the AVI Tag is lost, damaged or needs to be transferred to another vehicle, there will be a $13 replacement/transfer fee.

We thank you for your participation in the Jekyll Island annual pass program! We are very excited to share the new changes to our beautiful island with you and we hope to see you very soon and often. Apex will be released this weekend!

Apex is a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle that stranded on Little Cumberland Island on July 26, 2013. When Apex stranded, it was obvious why. He/she had been attacked by a large shark. Sharks are an apex predator of the oceans (hence the turtles name) and are one of very few natural predators of sea turtles. [...]
